FEELINGS IN ART - Another FABULOUS Mural at Aquebogue
A MURAL WITH A MESSAGE UNVEILED
(June 18, 2014) Aquebogue fourth graders worked with artist Joyce Raimondo and Aquebogue art teacher Maureen Ahern to create panels with four themes: TEAMWORK (from Aquebogue's Mission Statement), TRUSTWORTHY (self respect), RESPECT (from the District's Mission Statement) and WE CAN (from the Common Core Standards)!
After two months from conception to construction, Ms. Ahern led an unveiling ceremony of this colorful "mural with a message". The finished mural was drawn, painted and mounted in the cafeteria of the school and finally unveiled for all to see. Some of the fourth grade artists were chosen to field questions about the creation of the mural and several read essays on the impact of the implicit anti-bullying message of the mural in their own life view. This section of the ceremony was part of a K-12 anti-bullying curriculum written and orchestrated by Aquebogue first grade teacher Deborah Smidt. At the close of the assembly, students sang along with the YouTube video, "Together We can Change the World". |

A MURAL WITH A MESSAGE IN PROGRESS
(May 12, 2014) Aquebogue students in Maureen Ahern's art classes have been working with artist Joyce Raimondo to create a four-panel mural for their cafeteria that will reinforce and celebrate positive thoughts and behaviors. The first step in the process was to work with Ms. Raimondo to create panels that will form the basis for the mural. Aquebogue fourth graders worked with Ms. Raimondo and Ms. Ahern to create four panels with four themes: TEAMWORK (from Aquebogue's Mission Statement), TRUSTWORTHY (self respect), RESPECT (from the District's Mission Statement) and WE CAN (from the Common Core Standards)!
The process is almost complete. The panels have been transferred to permanent wooden panel which is now being painted by the fourth graders. Coming soon to the cafeteria at Aquebogue will be a "MURAL WITH A MESSAGE". The creation of the mural is being linked to a schoolwide curricula on respect, caring, teamwork and speaking out against bullying. Students will be writing essays that correspond to the themes promoted by the mural.

The District's Art-in-Action celebration is scheduled for Friday, May 16th, at 7PM, in the RHS gymnasium.

(February 2014) Aquebogue students in Maureen Ahern's art classes are working with artist Joyce Raimondo to create a four panel mural for their cafeteria that will reinforce and celebrate positive thoughts and behaviors. Ms. Raimondo asked the students, "What do you do when you are happy, sad, frightened, or mad? I want you to discover the creative and constructive ways that artists from van Gogh to Pollock expressed their feelings. In the process of working together, I want you to learn empathy, respect, and a sense of community by showing you how to embrace the diversity of ideas in art and through engaging in an act of teamwork with your classmates."
During lively discussions about art, Raimondo shows students how to listen to each others' opinions and truly celebrate each others' unique ways of seeing and learning.
"Through the act of creating a mural, students build art and social skills, work in teams to create posters and ultimately they will produce a mural that will promote positive character attributes such as respect, kindness, and teamwork," shares Ms. Ahern.
